"Maya, do you think we'll ever be together?" "I sure do. But only if we tease about for two years. In the meantime, I can date Cam and Miles, and do nothing with my life except have a boyfriend. And Tori can disappear without explanation. And you can join a gang, apparently, and completely reinvent your character. As long as we keep acknowledging that we want to be together and doing nothing about it, we'll have it made in the shade."

Like Whoa! How is this other band supposed to live up to the impossibly high standards that we have set?
What are you guys doing after this? You wanna go tp Stefan Brogen's house?
Zoe is the new Red.
"I hear you've got some delicious tuna sandwiches now that this Rivas girl is working for you." "Your face is a tuna sandwich. Burn."
It's my fifteenth birthday party and I'll cry if I want to, Dad!
Second verse, same as the first.
So, like, do you wanna do stuff? Like have a boyfriend? No. I mean put pudding on Damon's chair. Or testifying against Luke Baker. Or starting a pornography ring. Oh. I would, but I'm kind of busy right now trying to have a boyfriend.
Where are you Mr. Simpson? Who are you Becky Baker? Does anyone remember J.T.?
Hollingsworth Son Outs Dad as Homophobe Miles Hollingsworth III tells reporters “he told me that being gay is ridiculous.” A shocking revelation from the Hollingsworth campaign trail as the Mayoral candidate’s eldest son accuses him of homophobia. Recently out, Miles Hollingworth III – a sophomore at Toronto’s Degrassi Community School – was offended that his father wasn’t able to accept him or his sexual orientation. “It feels like the world has taken giant steps forward to accepting people like me, but my father is stuck in the past,” said Miles to our reporter in an exclusive interview. “I thought I knew who my father was, but now… I’m not so sure.” The city already outlawed discrimination against anyone in employment, housing and public accomodations based on gender, race, age, disability or religion. The proposed change would add sexual orientation and gender identity to that list. In the House of Commons, four parties support LGBT right with varying degrees. The New Democratic Party, Green Party and Bloc Québécois are the most vocal supporters of these rights, and the Liberal Party of Canada is divided in its approach to the issue, but it mainly advocates equal right for LGBT citizens. At its founding, the Conservative Party of Canada was largely opposed to LGBT rights, although some members, typically former members of the Progressive Conservative Party, have supported LGBT rights, including same-sex marriage. Former members of the Canadian Alliance have generally opposed expanded LGBT rights, and a fromer CA MP was rebuked for calls to re-criminalize homosexuality. Since 2006, the Conservative Party has become a stronger advocate for LGBT rights, in Canada and abroad.
There I was, absorbing all of the glory that Season 1 of Degrassi has to offer, and suddenly, Captain Bringdown, aka Season 14, was thrown back into my face with a preview video and some press. I am specifically referring to this article, posted on E!. The article brings attention to several new characters that will debut this season, and they are described as follows: "Amanda Arcuri is set to take on the role of new freshman Lola Pacini, a boy-crazy cheerleader with colorful hair and a vibrant personality. Her two besties? Frankie (Sara Waisglass), Miles' little sister, and fellow newcomer Shay Powers, played by Reiya Downs, who is determined to be one of the school's top athletes. While Shay has high standards when it comes to high school and boys, the only guy she's interested doesn't exactly feel the same way. Another new freshman? Arlene Takahashi (played by Devyn Nekoda) is the quintessential nerd who can be found reading comics while wearing elf ears...that is when she's not being picked on by the cheerleaders. Finally, there's Jonah Haak, a new grade 11 student played by Ehren Kassam. While he used to be a bit of a troublemaker, Jonah has seen the light and is ready to make new friends who share his strong faith. While he may have given up all his vices, Jonah's kept the rock 'n' roll." In case you lost track, that is 4 newbies. I can't decide which one I am least excited about. Even in a one sentence description, two of these characters can't escape being pigeon-holed into relationship-obsessed snoozefests. This is so disturbing. It is obvious that the show focuses heavily on relationships at the expense of any real character development. Now, even though these characters are brand new, currently existing only in the imagination, their entire potential has been written wholly based on how they fit into relationships. The two descriptions that don't immediately focus on their relationship potential (Arlene and Jonah), just sound like ridiculous, one-dimensional stereotypes. Time will tell, but they are fighting an uphill battle against my ever-growing disappointment with this show. Here is the promo music video for Season 14. Sadly, the most interesting part of this video featured Zig and Tiny, which showed hope of actually using Tiny as a full-blown character instead of background fodder. Clare? Bleh. Miles and the burning of the Holilngsworth family album? My face hurts from being hit with all the symbolism. Imogen? Fine, except that it is based around meaningless relationship drama with Jack. Becky and Drew? Ditto. Alli and Dallas? I'm starting to notice a trend here. Here is the video: What's with all the negativity? Season 1 is where it's at! This show used to be so good. I am looking forward to watching these old episodes much more than the new ones (obvi, I'll watch them anyway). So, on a positive note, I will leave you with the original version of a classic song that was almost unrecognizable in the previous video. Smash on mighty pumpkins. Smash on. |
